There are three padel racket shapes. Round keeps the sweet spot in the centre for control, diamond pushes it towards the tip for power, and teardrop sits between. Across our 1,418-racket catalogue the trade is clear: diamonds average 8.6 for power, rounds 8.2 for sweet spot.

## Three shapes, three sweet spots

Outlines drawn to one scale. The shaded area is the sweet spot; the ring on the axis is the balance point.

The wider the head near the top, the higher the sweet spot and the balance. Round is widest in the middle, teardrop a little higher, diamond highest.

## The three shapes in the catalogue

Average catalogue ratings out of 10 for every racket of each shape. Median price is euro RRP; UK street prices are usually lower.

| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Round | 474 | 6.8 | 8.1 | 8.2 | 8.2 | Low to medium | €200 |
| Teardrop | 521 | 7.7 | 8.2 | 8.1 | 8.1 | Medium | €240 |
| Diamond | 421 | 8.6 | 8.3 | 7.8 | 7.7 | High | €259 |

## What the shape actually changes

Every padel racket is the same length and width at most: the rules cap it at 45.5 cm long and 26 cm wide. Shape decides where inside that outline the head is widest, and that one choice moves two things: the **sweet spot**, the area of the face that returns the ball cleanly, and the **balance**, the point where the racket would sit level on your finger. Everything else people say about shape follows from those two.

### Round: the sweet spot in the middle

A round head is widest halfway up, so the sweet spot sits in the centre of the face, close to your hand, and it is large. The mass sits low as well. Of the round rackets with a listed balance, 57% are low or low-medium and almost all the rest are medium. That makes a round frame quick at the net and easy to steer. The price is power: round rackets average 6.8 for power, a full point below teardrops and 1.8 below diamonds. They lead on sweet spot (8.2) and manoeuvrability (8.2), and 90% of the round rackets the catalogue labels by game are labelled control. Round is the shape for beginners, for the right-side player who builds points, and for anyone whose elbow has opinions. The [round padel racket](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/round-padel-racket) page has eight picks.

### Teardrop: the one in the middle

A teardrop head is widest a little above the centre, so the sweet spot and the balance both move up a few centimetres. It is the biggest group in the catalogue, 521 rackets, and 58% of the teardrops with a listed balance are medium. The averages sit between the other two on every column: power 7.7, control 8.2, sweet spot 8.1. That is the point. A teardrop does not win any single column; it gives up the least. Two-thirds of the teardrops the catalogue labels by game are labelled versatile. Most intermediate and advanced club players belong here, and our [teardrop padel racket](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/teardrop-padel-racket) guide lists the best of them.

### Diamond: the sweet spot near the tip

A diamond head is widest high up and narrows in straight lines towards the throat. The sweet spot sits high and is the smallest of the three (7.8 on average), and the mass sits at the tip: 93% of the diamonds with a listed balance are medium-high or high. More mass further from your hand means more speed through the ball on a smash or a vibora, which is why diamonds average 8.6 for power and 77% of the labelled ones are sold as power rackets. They are also the slowest to move (7.7 manoeuvrability) and the heaviest on paper: 21% start at 365 g or more, against 10% of round rackets. The [diamond padel racket](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/diamond-padel-racket) page is honest about who should not buy one.

### Why diamonds score well on control

The one number that looks wrong is control: diamonds average 8.3, the highest of the three. It is a price effect, not a shape effect. Diamonds are the dearest group (median €259 RRP against €200 for round) and only 17% of them cost under €150, against 31% of round rackets. Cheap fibreglass beginner rackets pull the round averages down. Compare like with like, only rackets at €250 RRP or more, and control is almost flat: round 8.8, diamond 8.8, teardrop 8.6. What still separates the shapes at that price is exactly what the geometry predicts: power runs 7.5 round, 8.3 teardrop, 9.2 diamond, and sweet spot runs the other way, 8.9 round, 8.5 teardrop, 8.2 diamond.

### Shape is not the whole story

Balance and core can pull a racket away from its shape. The Babolat Counter Viper 2026 is round but has a medium-high balance and a hard core, and the catalogue rates its control a full 10. The Bullpadel Neuron 02 Edge 2026 is a diamond with a medium-high balance, control 9.6 and a 9.1 sweet spot. Brands also sell "hybrid" frames that sit between two shapes: [Bullpadel](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/bullpadel)'s Hack 04 2026 is a diamond, while the Hack 04 Hybrid 2026 is filed as a teardrop. Read the balance and the feel (core hardness) next to the shape, never instead of it. The [best padel racket](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/best-padel-racket) guide covers all six specs.

### Shape and the side you play

In a right-handed pair the **left-side** player finishes points: most of the smashes, the bandejas that become viboras, the balls down the middle. That is the job a diamond is built for. The **right-side** player builds points: returns, lobs, long rallies from the back glass. A round or teardrop frame with a big sweet spot keeps more of those balls in. If you swap sides from match to match, a teardrop is the safe middle.

### How to choose in three questions

First, how often do you hit the centre of the face? If the honest answer is "not always", buy round. Second, which side do you play and who takes the smashes? The finisher can use a diamond; the builder rarely needs one. Third, how is your arm? Low balance and a softer core go easy on the elbow; a high-balance, hard diamond does not. Our free [AI racket finder](https://padelaiapp.com/features/padel-racket-finder) asks these questions and ranks all 1,418 rackets. In the Padel AI app the same finder can start from a filmed match: [padel video analysis](https://padelaiapp.com/features/padel-video-analysis) scores your real technique, so the shape it suggests follows how you actually hit, not how you think you hit. Brand ranges are on the [racket brand pages](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets), for example [Nox](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/nox) and [Head](https://padelaiapp.com/rackets/head).

## Which shape for which player

### First season: round

The biggest, most central sweet spot and the lowest balance forgive a late or off-centre swing. 135 round rackets cost under €150 RRP.

*Round*

### Right-side builder: round or teardrop

Your job is to keep the ball in and move the opponents. Sweet spot and manoeuvrability matter more to you than raw power.

*Round*

### All-rounder, either side: teardrop

Medium balance, the middle score on every column. The shape that gives up the least if you do not know yet what kind of player you are.

*Teardrop*

### Left-side finisher: diamond

If you already take the overheads and reach the ball early, the high balance turns a good smash into one that leaves the court.

*Diamond*

### Sore elbow or shoulder: round

Low balance and a softer core: 56% of round rackets have a medium-soft or soft feel. Avoid high-balance, hard-core diamonds.

*Round*

### Tennis convert with a big swing: teardrop

Enough head speed to use some power, not yet the timing for a diamond sweet spot. A medium-balance teardrop covers both.

Weight is the manufacturer's stated range. Balance is where the mass sits: low means towards the handle, high means towards the head. Price band is the recommended retail price in euros (entry under 120, mid 120 to 200, premium 200 to 300, pro over 300); UK street prices are usually lower. Level is our reading of the shape, balance and core, not a rule.

## Four things people get wrong about racket shape

### "Diamond means more control is lost"

At €250 RRP and above, diamonds average 8.8 for control, level with round. What they lose is sweet spot size and manoeuvrability.

### "Round rackets have no power"

The Alkemia Terra 2026 is round and rated 8.9 for power with control 10. Power comes from balance, core and your swing as well as shape.

### "The pros use diamonds, so they are better"

Professionals hit the centre of a small sweet spot hundreds of times a day. Most club players miss it often enough that a diamond costs them points.

### "Teardrop is a compromise, so it is second best"

It is the largest group in the catalogue for a reason. For a player who attacks and defends, giving up the least is the best result.

## Questions about padel racket shapes

### What are the different padel racket shapes?

Three: round, teardrop and diamond. Round puts the sweet spot in the centre with a low balance, diamond puts it near the tip with a high balance, and teardrop sits between. Some brands sell hybrid frames, but each is still close to one of the three.

### Which padel racket shape is best for beginners?

Round. It has the largest and most central sweet spot (8.2 on average in our catalogue) and usually a low or medium balance, which forgives the late, off-centre contact every beginner makes.

### Is a diamond or round padel racket better?

Neither is better; they do different jobs. Diamonds average 8.6 for power, round rackets 6.8. Round rackets average 8.2 for sweet spot, diamonds 7.8. Choose on your level and the side you play.

### What is a teardrop padel racket?

A racket whose head is widest a little above the centre. The sweet spot and the balance sit slightly higher than on a round racket, so it adds some power without the small sweet spot of a diamond. It suits most intermediate players.

### Does racket shape matter more than weight?

Shape and balance matter more than the weight on the sticker. Two rackets at 365 g feel very different if one carries the mass at the tip. Shape largely decides the balance, so start there.

### Which shape do professional players use?

Mostly diamonds, especially on the left side: Juan Lebrón, Ale Galán and Paquito Navarro all play diamond signature frames. Several right-side professionals play teardrops, for example the Bullpadel Neuron 02 of Fede Chingotto.
